At the start of the war, the true horror of the conflict quickly became apparent in Brussels with the arrival of the first wounded soldiers, war dead and civilian refugees.

Clandestine papers such as La Libre Belgique and De Vlaamse Leeuw nevertheless sought to show another 'reality' and boost morale among the population.

Worrying news arrived: the bombing of the Evere base, the sacking of Louvain, the destruction of Dinant, civilian executions, the use of gas in Ypres, and so on.

Little by little, new horrors became apparent with the return of casualties who had been mutilated, maimed and gassed.
